Longtime Boston College assistant sports information director Dick Kelley was named the male recipient of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s Most Courageous Award, the USBWA announced Thursday.

The award is presented annually by the USBWA to honor male and female athletes, coaches, officials or administrators in college athletics who have demonstrated extraordinary courage while facing adversity in life.

Kelley, whose official title is assistant athletic director/media relations, was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, but despite the fact that he has been confined to a wheelchair and lost much of his ability to speak as his health has declined, he has remained a presence on campus and in the athletic department. He can be seen at BC basketball home games on press row.

“I am overwhelmed and very grateful for this amazing honor,” Kelley wrote when informed of the award. “I have never sought recognition but rather did what I did because I loved my job and everyone I had the privilege of working with.”

Kelley, an Andover native who graduated from BC in 1987 and became a full-time member of the media relations staff in 1991, will receive his award at the Eagles’ home game against Virginia on March 6.
