Boston College forward Cam Atkinson elected to forgo his senior season and sign a two-year entry-level contract with Columbus, the Blue Jackets announced Sunday. The move came two days after the Eagles’ season ended with an 8-4 upset loss to Colorado College on Friday.

Atkinson registered 68 goals and 56 assists for 124 points in 117 games at BC. He finished the 2010-11 season with 31 goals (good for second in the nation) and 21 assists and is one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. The Greenwich, Conn., native led the country with 30 goals in 2009-10 and helped the Eagles win the national championship. Atkinson is the first Division 1 player to tally 30 goals in back-to-back seasons since Colorado College’s Brett Sterling did it in 2004-05 and 2005-06.

The Blue Jackets selected Atkinson in the sixth round (157th overall) of the 2008 NHL draft.
